5 Ways to Beat the Back to School Blues
Share
The end of summer hits different when there's a kid in the house. One week it's pool days and no bedtime, the next it's alarm clocks and packed lunches. Here are five ways to ease that transition, for the kids and for you.
1. Plan One Last Family Day
Before the schedule locks back in, carve out a full day for something memorable. A hike somewhere new, a trip to an amusement park, the zoo, a water park, or a day exploring a nearby city all work. The goal isn't the activity itself. It's giving summer a proper send-off instead of letting it fade out on a random Tuesday.
2. Throw a "Stay Up Late" Night
Pick one night, a few days before school starts, and let the rules bend. Extended bedtime, a movie marathon, board games until everyone's yawning. Kids remember these nights. It also gives them something to look forward to instead of only dreading what's coming.
3. Reset Mornings Gradually
Waking a kid up an hour earlier on day one is rough on everyone. Start the week before school begins and shift the wake-up time in small steps, 30 minutes or an hour depending on how late they've been sleeping in. Their body clock adjusts more easily this way, and the first day of school stops feeling like a shock to the system.
4. Give Them Some Control
Going back to school means kids lose a lot of the freedom they had all summer. Handing them small decisions can soften that. Let them pick out their first-day outfit, choose their own school supplies, or decide what's for the first-week dinners. It's a small thing that makes a real difference in how in-control they feel.
5. Add a Little Whimsy to Their Supplies
New school supplies are a built-in opportunity to make the season feel a little more exciting instead of just routine. A backpack pin set, a sticker sheet for a water bottle or laptop, a notebook with character art on the cover, or a t-shirt with a fun design can turn "back to school" from a chore into something they're actually looking forward to wearing or using.
